After being spoilt with action from all four corners of the globe over the past month, this following weekend offers up a mixed bag of fights all with one thing in common: huge favourites.
Finding value in a big favourite can often be a hard slog in boxing betting; this coupled with the restricted markets forces us to bet on multiples to squeeze life out of our selections.
In the UK, this weekend’s action is dominated by a card in Newcastle, headlined by local emerging talent Lewis Ritson. Ritson is currently 17-0 after blitzing away his last four opponents inside three rounds; despite challenging for the vacant European lightweight title, his foe on Saturday night – Francesco Patera – isn’t expected to fair much better. The problem is, 1/40 for Ritson to get the victory isn’t enticing in the slightest. If the market becomes available on fight night, back ‘Sandman’ to win by stoppage at a better price.
The undercard features the best balanced fight of the weekend in Robbie Davies Jnr vs Glenn Foot. With just one loss to Michal Syrowatka – which he avenged in a rematch eight weeks later – Davies Jnr is looking to move quickly in the lightweight division after impressing in his 17 previous fights. At 29 years of age, Davies Jnr has recently signed a three fight deal with Matchroom Boxing; a stable known for avoiding risks at the start of a relationship.
At 4/11, Robbie Davies Jnr is crucial to build into our multiple in order to gain value. Avoid the method of victory market here, with Glenn Foot known for going the distance.
Now to the US. Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford makes his return to the ring after claiming the WBO world welterweight title off of Jeff Horn in the summer; the Australian previously bested Manny Pacquiao for the strap. Crawford (33-0) takes on Jose Benavidez Jnr in his home of Omaha. ‘Bud’ is one of the rare fighters that has built a strong home following in the US; Saturday night should all be too much for his American opponent. Despite remaining unbeaten, Benavidez Jnr has struggled for a breakout fight in the division; his price of 12/1 indicates the state of play, as Crawford looks to remain in the sports mythical pound-for-pound top five and target a fight with Errol Spence Jnr.
So here we have it – three fights with big favourites; clear winners. Adding a fourth to our multiple would be Zolani Tete. Tete is travelling to Ekateringburg against Mikhail Aloyan: a four fight southpaw. It’s common to fear the unknown in boxing, however, Tete has shown his class since winning the WBO world bantamweight title. I don’t expect him to slip up in Eastern Russia.
4x multiple of fight winners: Zolani Tete, Lewis Ritson, Terence Crawford and Robbie Davies Jnr – 4/5 (Betfred)
